Zinfandel is a black-skinned wine grape that is widely planted in California. The grapes are used to create two very different types of wine. White Zinfandel is rosé wine that is low in alcohol (8.5% ABV) and calories, and has a somewhat sweet taste.

These wines are refreshing and quite popular but lack depth or complexity. Red Zinfandels, often called Zins, are red in color and can be bold with moderate tannins and high acidity. The high alcohol levels of 14-17% ABV imbue these wines with bigger, bolder texture. Rich fruit flavors of black currants and berries are followed by a peppery, spicy, and/or smoky finish. Zins pair well with curry, barbecue, pork, roasted vegetables, caramelized onions, and beets.

HINT: Zinfandels from high elevations tend to have more intense, richer flavors than those grown at lower elevations.
